Set default redial times

When using Dial-Up Networking to connect to the internet, is there any way of shortening the time the modem stays connected to a busy line before retrying?

You can specify the number of seconds the modem should wait between attempts to dial using the Dial-Up Settings, which you can reach from the Internet Control Panel. However, your modem will normally hang up straight away when it receives a busy tone.

What may be happening is that your modem does not recognise the recorded voice announcements that you often get when trying to connect to a busy ISP. This is normal and, when it happens, the modem will wait for the interval specified under 'Call preferences' on the Connection tab of the modem properties dialog box - 'Cancel the call if not connected within xx secs' - before hanging up and retrying.

The default time is 60 seconds and it's inadvisable to decrease this value. If you do reduce the number of seconds then, on days when your ISP is being sluggish, Windows may not allow sufficient time to establish and authenticate a connection. See also tip Set automatic dialup times
